Couples Therapy
Similar to any talk therapy, couples therapy is designed to alleviate distress and enhance the functioning of two people in a committed relationship. The ultimate goal is to rebuild a healthy relationship based on strong values, trust, and love for each other.
It's a unique opportunity for both individuals to openly share their conflicting perspectives and any relevant information that may be contributing to their unhappiness in the relationship. This open sharing is not only encouraged but also fully supported in the safe space of couples therapy.
What can I expect during couples therapy?
Couples therapy is initiated when both parties are present and usually happens conjointly. Dr Adelbert Scholtz, an experienced psychologist, plays a key role in facilitating open and honest communication. He listens attentively to the concerns and troubles in the relationship, creating a safe space for both individuals to share all their concerns or issues that contributed to any turmoil in the relationship.
What are the different types of approaches in couples therapy?
The Gottman Method
Both individuals in the relationship learn to respect one another and to openly express emotions, with the aim of getting closer. A sound relationship is built on knowing each other in all aspects —emotionally, mentally, physically, and intimately. By knowing small things about each other, you take an active approach to building a strong foundation for friendship and intimacy. Vocalising the positive attributes of your partner is also important, as it helps them realise you love and appreciate them, making them feel valued and important in the relationship.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Emotionally focused therapy, a short-term therapeutic approach, provides a supportive environment for the couple to focus on their emotional and attachment needs. It allows them to come to terms with their emotions, understanding why they feel a particular way and how it impacts the relationship, which enables them to reconnect and develop a trusting, secure bond.
