Forensic Psychology
What is forensic psychology?
Forensic psychology is the application of psychological expertise within the judicial and legal system. A forensic psychologist, with their extensive knowledge and experience in clinical psychology, assesses the psychological state of individuals in contact with judicial, police, and correctional systems, providing a high level of professional competence.
A forensic psychologist is committed to the following tasks:
- Evaluate and interview subjects, who include those involved in civil proceedings
- Offer expert opinions to attorneys, police and judges.
- Crisis management
- Conflict resolution
- Provide highly effective interpersonal communication.
One of a psychologist's duties is to prepare reports on their patients' findings when they are involved in judicial proceedings. This process involves obtaining written permission from the patient or their legal guardian, especially when there’s confidential information that must be disclosed during legal proceedings or to the court. This is a crucial step in maintaining the ethical standards of the profession.
What’s in a forensic report?
A forensic report involving children is a comprehensive account, providing detailed insights into the child’s unique circumstances, including incidents of violence and abuse. It’s a legally defensive report that safeguards the child’s interests and, at the same time, minimises trauma. The report contains a wealth of information on the child’s background, personal details, referrals, methodology, the narrative, and medical findings, if applicable, ensuring that all aspects are covered.

Forensic reports are a critical requirement in divorce cases, playing a pivotal role in establishing the minor's interests and determining the extent of the victim's damage. The psychologist responsible for preparing the forensic report must provide conclusive findings and evidence based on a comprehensive case history and psychological test results. Dr Adelbert Scholtz has extensive experience in this area, having been entrusted with numerous cases and the significant responsibility of preparing reports for several courts and the family advocate’s office.
